Slaid Cleaves - Hometown USA Lyrics
It’s closing time tonight in HarlanSet the alarm, turn out the lightsNot a soul out on the sidewalkAs she steps into the nightAcross the parking lot she fumblesIn her handbag for the keysAnother long day of “thank you’s,Yes, ma’am’s” and “May I help you please”Sure didn’t turn out like she plannedShe thought she’d be a star by nowDodging paparazzi camerasBut she’s in Harlan still somehowWhat happened to the leading ladyLiving her life upon the stageStill only working as an extraIn a film called “Hometown, USA”Now somewhere south of town on 40A Greyhound bus rolls through the nightStaring out a greasy windowHe keeps searching the lightsNo choice but head back home to HarlanWhen foreclosure shut him downAnd after all that he had worked forJust to end up right back in your hometownWhat happened to the “Ride ‘em cowboy”Living his life out on the rangeHe’s just another hired hand nowIn a film called “Hometown, USA”Now they don’t know their fate is turningThey’re drifting closer in the darkAnd as he steps in for a quick one? She’s already at the barTonight her lines will come so naturalAnd he’ll tell tales of trails he rodeThey’ll fall in love beneath the neonTonight they’re gonna steal the showSure didn’t turn out like they plannedBut now they’ve found their own true wayIt’s not the big break that they dreamed ofBut you know they’re gonna be okayIt’s not a bad part after all nowIn a film called “Hometown, USA”
